The extension to the women’s gym at Bangor Street Community Centre has now been completed. The gym, a joint project between the Healthy Living Centre and Bangor St Community Association, opened three years ago and has proved so popular that it has been extended into two rooms with improved changing and shower facilities. Louise Jarrold, the Fitness Development Officer for the HLC, set up a gym user group for the members so they were involved in choosing which new equipment would go in the gym. The new equipment includes 3 treadmills, 2 bikes and 2 rowing machines and a cross trainer. Louise said “There is a big demand for a women only gym and, by involving the members in the running of it, we ensure we are meeting the needs of the community. Along with the men’s gym we now have one of the best equipped community gyms in the country, and at only £24 per year for membership it is affordable, as well as being open 7 days a week.”
Abdul Mulla, the HLC manager said “by working in partnership with the Community Association and Blackburn with Darwen Neighbourhood Engagement department the community now has a facility that is well equipped, affordable, meets the needs of the community, and being in a community centre it is easily accessible. We are especially pleased with one ladies experience. She has lost three stones and is coming to the gym 4 or 5 days a week for a 1 hour session each time. She has changed her diet and feels much fitter, she no longer has joint pains or gets out of breath and is attending keep fit classes run by the HLC.
