Bank Top Community Football League was such a success last year with young people, it was decided to do it again!!  Run by  Blackburn with Darwen Community Development staff at  Bank Top and supported by the Healthy Living Centre, the league started in the summer this year and was open to young people aged 8-12 years. The project involved a weekly league and a cup tournament.

As with all health education, physical health is very important to enable young people to understand how exercise can increase their physical, mental and emotional well being and how maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be fun.  The football project encouraged children from different backgrounds to mix and play together, whilst promoting healthy living.

The project allows young people to:  build physical strength and endurance, build good relationships with other young people from the community, build confidence, and learn to work as a member of a team.

The Healthy Living Centre has funded the trophies which are to be awarded  to:

  • Football League Winners and Runners Up
  • Cup Winners and Runners Up
  • Top  League Scorer
  • Best Goalkeeper
  • Player of the Season
  • Manager of the Season

These trophies will be awarded at an awards ceremony in October.

We feel the project has been successful on many different levels, which have included:-

  • Community Cohesion, children from different backgrounds taking part in an activity, which promotes working together, and involves having fun.
  • Community Involvement, Parents or relatives becoming the manager of a team or supporting their child every week on the sideline.
  • Diversionary Activities, local children involved in positive activities, which may deter them from engaging in anti-social behaviour.
  • Health Promotion, using football to highlight factors that could have a positive health benefit on their physical and emotional development.
  • Promoting Sport
  • Partnership working

Last year the Community Association were successful in receiving funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest Grant, which funded equipment and kits which enabled the tournament to continue this year.
