Community café planningPACT is an organisation run by volunteers who work with the community, and they are currently in the process of developing a community cafe at the Old Cheethams. The Healthy Living Centre have been involved in developing sessions that have encouraged young people and community volunteers to get involved in the planning and running of the cafe. The sessions with 9-12 year olds have involved young people working in teams to find recipes that they would like to sample, using different sources such as books, internet, and family. We looked at balanced diets and why they are important. In further sessions, the group have had opportunity to cook and eat the recipies and then have the final say on the menu. The group have also created their own menu chalkboard to be used in the cafe. A group of young people aged 16-18 who are going to be responsible for helping to run the cafe, have been trained in Foundation Food Hygiene which will enable them to work in the cafe safely. Over the summer, the group came and learnt how to cook the healthy recipes from the PACT Community Cafe Cookbook. The Healthy Living Centre has also funded the complete refurbishment of the kitchen to be used, which conforms to Health and Safety regulations. Abdul Mulla (Manager)
