Community research projectOne of the main aims of the Bank Top HLC project is to create a Community Action Team (CAT). The main function of the CAT will be to help steer the project by setting agendas and exploring project ideas. As the Bank Top project's main target group is young people aged between 9 and 25, it was deemed crucial that the CAT should be made up of people from within the targeted age group. In order for the CAT to influence the project it was felt important that they needed to find out exactly how young people felt about living in Bank Top and also to gauge the levels of awareness and attitudes towards many of the health issues that affect young people. In order to achieve the above a training package has been devised and a programme of youth consultation and research will be delivered. The consultation techniques that will be utilised will be chosen by the young people, they will be facilitated by the young people who will be seeking the opinions of other young people from the Bank Top area. Once all the data has been collated the young people will be assisted to create an action plan, which form the basis of the CAT's agenda for the remainder of the HLC project. All training will be accredited, and all the young people who will be carrying out the research will be paid for their time. The team's first piece of research took place on 13.2.04 at St Barnabas and St Paul's primary school with young people aged 9-11 years. The team used a variety of consultation methods to explore people's opinions about Bank Top. It was an enjoyable and successful afternoon! On 1st April, the Community Action Team consulted the youth club members at Bank Top Community Centre to find out their views about the area. The group also used song writing as a medium to explore these ideas. The group have also talked to adults about their views of young people in the area. Abdul Mulla (Manager)
