‘Fit for Life’ Asthma Club
An innovative project  at a local school in Blackburn

Jayne Worden a School Nurse with Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust, Cathy Watson, Deputy Manager Blackburn with Darwen Healthy Living and Public Health Nurse, Shahida Hanif have been working in partnership with school staff to set up a club for Asthmatic children in Hawthorns School called ‘Fit for Life’
The ‘Fit for Life’ Asthma club has been organised in response to an Asthma Awareness Audit which highlighted that pupils and parents would benefit from increase knowledge and support when managing Asthma.The Fit for Life Asthma club is a nine week project where the children will learn how to control their Asthma and learn about self management, using fun activities including; games and exercise. The pupils will also attend recorder lessons to help improve inhaler technique.The pupils will be asked to keep dairies to record when they have asthma symptoms, when they use their inhalers and any disruption in their sleep pattern.As part of the project, the pupils will design a logo and an Asthma Leaflet that will be produced in local languages to improve access to information for parents and children.  At the end of the course, pupils will be presented with a certificate and be invited to join a drama project that will focus on asthma issues.Parents will also be invited to meet with a variety of health professional to learn more about their child’s asthma how they can continue to be supported by local services once the project has finished.
