Blackburn North Healthy Living Centre

Snazzy snacks

Picture 060

The Healthy Living Centre is embarking on a project with pupils from local schools.  The project aims to highlight healthy eating messages to Yr 6 pupils in an innovative yet informative way.  Yr 6 pupils have been targeted mainly because as they start secondary school they will have much more knowledge and understanding in regards to healthy eating and will thus be able to actively seek and make healthier food choices.  Pupils will be practically involved in making healthy snacks such as toasties, smoothies, vegetable wraps and fruit kebabs during the session.  They will also be taught basic knife skills as well as how to use other kitchen equipment such as blenders.  Recipes will be given to pupils, which in-turn may give them confidence to try and make what they made at school independently at home.

The pupils will then be taken to a local supermarket where they will take part in a shopping tour.  The shopping tour will highlight healthy food options and also encourage children to make healthier food choices if they shop with their parents.  Additionally, with the government highlighting the importance of reading food labels, the pupils will take part in reading labels and interpreting them.
